Always check the tag before washing

Depending on what type of coat you’re cleaning, it may be machine washable or dry clean only. We recommend following the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. So if your coat says, “Dry Clean Only,” then we suggest taking it to the cleaner once per season.

Are down filled jackets and coats washable?

Down filled jackets are very warm and a great investment. If you have a down coat, it’s important to keep it clean so it lasts you many long, cold Winters. Most down coats can be washed in the machine, in cold water. Keep reading for more details!

How To Machine Wash a Down Jacket

Now that you know how to tell if your coat is machine washable, here’s how to wash it properly. In general, you’ll want to wash a puffy down coat separately from other laundry in a cold, gentle cycle.

Step 1: Remove the fur, check the pockets

Fur (including faux fur) trimmed hoods are popular in many down jacket styles, from ski slopes to fashion blogs. One key tip for washing your winter coat is to remove the hood or fur trim (it’s often attached with buttons, snaps, or a zipper). This is because if the fur goes through the washer and dryer, your fluffy hood will become a matted mess. If the hood and fur needs cleaning, spray it with HEX Anti-Stink Spray. This spray is formulated to clean, deodorize, and protect fabrics that you can’t throw in the washing machine.

Step 2: Wash with HEX

Using the right laundry detergent for technical winter fabrics is key when cleaning coats. You need a detergent that gets through months of dirt and grime. But it needs to clean without compromising the coat’s technical features like water resistance and moisture wicking. HEX Performance is the only cleaning system that harnesses the eco-friendly HEX Molecule to deep clean and protect all fabrics!

Tips for washing coats

  • Wash in cold water, on a delicate cycle
  • Pre-treat any stains on the coat with HEX Laundry Odor & Stain Remover
  • Don’t add any fabric softener, as it can harm synthetic fabrics with technical features
  • For big, puffy jackets, a front load washer with plenty of space and no agitator works best
  • Don’t overstuff the machine – wash the coat by itself
  • To dry, air dry or tumble dry on the lowest heat setting
