Wash & Clean Shoes, Sneakers and Cleats the Right Way

Shoes, sneakers, and cleats can be very expensive and are often some of the dirtiest and smelliest items we wear. Yet most of us never wash or clean our shoes to improve their look and feel or extend their life.

We’ve done the leg work and put together all of the best tips for you in one place to ensure you get the most out of your pricey footwear.

Take a few minutes and read this simple guide to learn how to wash and clean your shoes, sneakers, and cleats the right way, every time.

How to Wash & Clean Shoes, Sneakers, and Cleats*

  1. Remove insoles and laces from your shoes for machine washing. Set aside the rest of the shoe for hand-washing.
  2. Place insoles and laces in a garment bag or pillowcase.
  3. Place garment bag or pillowcase in a washing machine using cold water on a gentle setting. Run the cycle using HEX Detergent.
  4. Next, mix 1 Gallon of warm water with 1 tablespoon of HEX Detergent.
  5. Wash the sole of your shoe using a brush and your warm water mixture to remove any dirt and/or stains.
  6. Wash the upper using a sponge or cloth. Ensure you don’t scrub too hard and damage the fabric or shape of the upper.

Pro Tip:
Avoid submerging the shoe completely in water as this can damage the glues in the shoe and cause fabrics like leather to warp and crack.

How to Dry Shoes, Sneakers, and Cleats*

  1. Never put any shoe in the dryer. This could damage both the shoe and your dryer.
  2. Stuff newspaper or paper towels inside your shoes, sneakers, and cleats.
  3. Place the shoes in a well-ventilated area. Avoid leaving the shoes exposed to sunlight as this could damage their materials and fade colors.
  4. Allow shoes to air dry. Don’t wear them again until they are completely dry.

Pro Tip:
Make sure all components of your shoes are completely dry before putting everything back together to ensure you don’t affect their shape and fit.

Make Sure Your Shoes Never Stink Again.*

  1. Get HEX Deodorizing Spray.
  2. Spray it on your shoes to deodorize daily, after exercising, or as needed.
  3. Enjoy shoes that perform and smell their best!

Bonus Tip:
HEX Deodorizing Spray is made to deodorize all of your shoes and has a convenient travel sized bottle for easy “on-the-go” use. Take it with you and use it on everything - shoes, workout clothes, exercise equipment, yoga mats, upholstery, pet beds, car seats, and so much more. Try it today and love it or it’s free!

Whether you are looking to wash your shoes, clean your cleats, or freshen up your sneakers - HEX can help!

*For all washable fabrics we always recommend following the manufacturer’s washing instructions.
